Where did the Wedding custom 'Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue' come from?

 Wedding Traditions

Something Blue

After hearing the poem growing up I decided to look up the poem that a lot of brides turn to for their Wedding to find out what it actually means. It is funny how everyone seems to know of the poem but never knew what it meant. It's just something that has been carried on down the generations that you hear when you are a little girl and you begin to dream about your Perfect Princess Wedding. Every element in the poem has some magic to it that you just have to include in your Wedding day!

Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue,
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

After looking it up I'd heard of the first two lines of the poem but never the last. I found out that these items are good luck charms worn by the bride to give her a future of happiness and financial wealth normally passed on from close family members that lead a happy marriage and of course from your mum.:)

I love the ideas that some brides have come up to bring good luck to their special day!

I have found that the most popular items that a bride uses for good luck is her mother's Wedding dress(Something old and borrowed), Her jewellery or dress( Something New) ...But I think the hardest question is how will a bride incorporate blue into her Wedding unless blue it's your colour theme?

I have sourced a few ideas to help inspire old traditions...

Why not paint your nails blue? I'm not sure about finger nails, but I think the pale blue toe nails peeping out look awesome!:)  Just make sure you paint them well away from your Wedding dress! lol

...Or the latest trend is the make a big statement with your shoes! Bright colours are in this season so why not add the colour to your outfit with blue shoes which were featured in "the Knot"!

This idea of the tiffany blue under the shoes is really subtle but you can still carry on the tradition and receive the good luck that the colour blue brings!

These are great little handmade something blue stickers as seen on etsy!

Why not make your whole colour theme blue? There are some beautiful blues out there and a deep blue can look beautiful with a vintage or burlesque style wedding with an ostrich feather completing the theme!

Blue wedding flowers are another option as there are some beautiful blue flowers out there..especially for that spring wedding!

You could incorporate the 'something blue' into your lingerie or Wedding garter which is why I sew on a little tiffany blue bow onto the inside of every garter I make, giving all of my brides a little bit of good luck for their special day!

I love how some brides will make the colour statement but then the subtle ideas are somehow secretly giving you good luck for your life of happiness!
